Article Transcript

Phil Pike, affectionately known as Pip, is an exceptionally talented artist based in the Wirral,

who seamlessly intertwines his profound passion for both art and music to create captivating

contemporary pop art. His creative journey is deeply rooted in the colourful and dynamic

music scene of the 1980s, a decade that has significantly shaped his artistic identity. From

the infectious beats of New Wave and the flamboyant aesthetics of New Romantics to the

electrifying sounds of Synthpop and the darker undertones of Goth, Pip’s teenage years were

steeped in the rich tapestry of this influential era.

Pip’s work blends musical styles, reflected in art collections honouring his beloved artists. Each

piece celebrates iconic figures and movements that inspire him, showcasing his skill in capturing

influential times and cultures. His vibrant paintings invite viewers to experience the emotions of

the music he loves, connecting new audiences with the rhythms that defined a generation.

This captivating artwork beautifully portrays Ian Curtis, the iconic lead vocalist of the influential

post-punk band Joy Division, who is best known for his haunting and emotionally charged

composition ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart.’ Skilfully crafted with vibrant acrylics on a generous 30 x

30 inch canvas, the fluidity of the paint vividly captures and reflects the electrifying essence of

his unforgettable live performances, which left a lasting impact on audiences around the world.

Simultaneously, the artwork subtly alludes to the deep anguish and complexity of his melancholic

and troubled psyche, elements that fuelled both his artistry and personal struggles. Tragically,

Ian took his own life far too soon, at the tender age of just 23, and this year marks a poignant

milestone as we commemorate the 45th anniversary of his passing, a time for reflection on his

profound legacy and the indelible mark he left on the music world.

The painting is a component of Pip’s extensive ‘80s Goth collection, paying tribute to the era’s

monumental and darker musical vibes. Additional works in the series feature Siouxsie Sioux,

Robert Smith from The Cure, and Dave Vanian of The Damned.

Since launching Pip Pop Art in 2019, Pip has cultivated a substantial online following and

achieved global sales of his artwork. His work has been highlighted in renowned music

publications such as ‘Blitzed Magazine’ and the Mission fanzine ‘Tadeusz.’ Additionally, he created the cover art for the ‘At the BBC’ album by the 80s Goth band ‘The Rose of Avalanche,’ and he showcases his pieces at various venues throughout the North West of the UK.
